Contrary to conventional networks where the flow of data packets is managed by a predefined set of routing rules hardwired in the network switches, SDN technology relies on software algorithms for routing data packets throughout the network. SDN essentially changes the control of data flow in the network from the conventional hardware devices to a software application called controller.

Such settings allow network administrators and engineers to quickly respond to changing data requirements in an enterprise setup. Also, the network administrator can change the routing rules of switches in the network thus allowing prioritization, de-prioritization or even blockage of certain types of packets from the network. It is also possible to shape the flow of traffic in such setups through the central control console, without having to touch individual switches.

SDN technology provides innumerous benefits. Some of these include automation, flexibility and the possibilities to dynamically change the data flow according to changing data needs in a network.

Such facilities are especially beneficial in cloud computing services where a single network is rented by a number of different clients, all of which might have different data needs.

According to the report on the global SDN market by Transparency Market Research, the growth of this market in the future would be primarily driven by the rise in adoption of the cloud computing technology. This is due to its benefits in providing rapid and cost efficient data storage and access along with added flexibility, programmability and manageability in the network.

The report states that there are three major end users of this industry, viz. cloud computing infrastructure, enterprise applications and telecommunications services.

Of these, the enterprise applications' segment is the lead revenue generator, followed by telecommunications services and then the cloud computing segment. It is estimated that the segment of enterprise applications amassed nearly 35% shares of the global SDN market in the year 2012.

The report also states that the segment of cloud computing could be the fastest growing application segment for this market. The many benefits provided by cloud computing help organizations in substantially reducing their operating expenses as well as capital expenditures.

Geographically, North America stands as the global leader of the SDN technology market owing to the favorable regulations on network administration and high degree of standardization of services in this region. However, the report states that the Asia Pacific could achieve the fastest growth during the forecast period.

The SDN industry is quite fragmented in nature due to the presence of multiple players from different categories such as software developers, hardware providers and service providers. Some key players of the industry are Intel Corporation, Google, HP, Big Switch Networks, Juniper Networks, Cisco, NEC, IBM, Arista Networks, Verizon Communications, to name a few.

Large industrial manufacturing organizations are adopting the agile principles of cloud software companies. The industrial manufacturing development process has not scaled over time. Now that design CAD teams are geographically distributed, centralizing their work is key. With large multi-gigabyte projects, outdated tools have stifled industrial team agility, time-to-market milestones, and impacted P&L stakeholders.

Enterprises are adopting Kubernetes to accelerate the development and the delivery of cloud-native applications. However, sharing a Kubernetes cluster between members of the same team can be challenging. And, sharing clusters across multiple teams is even harder. Kubernetes offers several constructs to help implement segmentation and isolation. However, these primitives can be complex to understand and apply. As a result, it’s becoming common for enterprises to end up with several clusters. Thi...
