Gridstore Says: Virtualization Is Breaking Traditional Storage Architectures That Were Never Designed for This

MOUNTAIN VIEW, CA -- (Marketwired) -- 08/06/14 -- Gridstore™, a leader in software-defined storage (SDS) optimized for Windows Servers and Hyper-V today announced that their CEO, George Symons is discussing the limitations of server-side storage and how technologies are adapting at the Flash Memory Summit taking place August 5-7 in Santa Clara, California, featuring seminars, forums, keynotes and sessions from key industry experts.

Traditional storage architectures from over two decades ago are being 'broken' by the rise of virtualization, and businesses need to consider the best ways to optimize performance without breaking the bank. This is according to George Symons, CEO of Gridstore, who will be presenting details today at Flash Memory Summit.

Symons states at the event: "In order to draw the best benefits of virtualisation, virtual infrastructure is generally deployed using networked shared storage as it allows servers and storage to grow at different rates and makes admin utilities like live migration, failover and workload balancing easy to manage. These solutions are based around storage architectures that were developed decades ago when the computing infrastructure was dominated by a one-to-one relationship between physical servers and their associated storage. When used in virtual computing infrastructure, these traditional solutions do not deliver the performance required due to the I/O blender effect and the mismatch of many VMs storing their data in a single LUN.

Symons continues: "Businesses often find that the way to increase performance in this case is to add more storage or a significant amount of flash, but this can be very costly, and ironically cancel out the savings made from server consolidation in the first place.

"Those looking to keep costs low by embracing the benefits of virtualization need to make sure that they have the correct technology in place to be able to make use of it in the most efficient way. Software-defined storage complements Virtualization and allows storage resources to be defined, allocated and optimized on a VM by VM basis to provide precision IO Control so that the administrator can deliver predictability to VM performance," Symons concludes.
