IoT Meets SDN for WANs – Keeping Networks Secure & Manageable

At Internet of Things Expo, Distrix president Jay Friedman to discuss preparing networks for the explosive growth of IoT

@ThingsExpo Early Bird Savings here!

Reduce networking costs! Increase cyber security! Deploy applications faster! Add connectivity to our new office now! We're under attack now - drop everything and jump on it now! How does IT management keep up with these demands? On top of that challenge, the promises of the Internet of Things (IoT) are that the pace of change will increase 10x with new applications and new devices added to networks - forecasts are be between 50 billion and 200 billion over the next several years - and using ever more wireless protocols. Almost 2 billion connectable devices already are installed but they lack appropriate access and security models. Business owners, operational managers and operational technologist are demanding more and more to run the business. IT management is already feeling crushed under the weight of all these issues and it's only getting more challenging.

IoT is often talked about in terms of consumer applications but the impact on enterprises and industrial applications have yet to be fully explored. Issues such as network architecture, network provisioning and security are concerns when thousands of new points of presence are added to networks. Then there are the promises of the software-defined network (SDN). A question is how these two concepts come together to provide real solutions that will provide dramatic improvements to IT and OT network management.

In his session at @ThingsExpo, Jay Friedman, president of Distrix Inc., will discuss how the concepts of SDNs and virtualization - specifically wide-area network virtualization - provides a common foundation for a simpler and unified architecture, in which data and transport security are fundamental assumptions across the enterprise for corporate, industrial control, cloud and multi-tenant traffic. This foundation is necessary to provide the flexibility and agility required to prepare networks for the explosive growth to come with IoT.

DevOps has long focused on reinventing the SDLC (e.g. with CI/CD, ARA, pipeline automation etc.), while reinvention of IT Ops has lagged. However, new approaches like Site Reliability Engineering, Observability, Containerization, Operations Analytics, and ML/AI are driving a resurgence of IT Ops. In this session our expert panel will focus on how these new ideas are [putting the Ops back in DevOps orbringing modern IT Ops to DevOps].
