Red Hat, Inc. (NYSE: RHT), the world’s leading provider of open source solutions, today announced the formation of the ManageIQ community, which aims to provide the industry's leading open source cloud management platform with advanced governance and automation capabilities. Red Hat will contribute software acquired from ManageIQ, Inc., which currently serves as the basis for its Red Hat CloudForms open hybrid cloud management product. In addition to its software contributions, Red Hat will also provide integration and orchestration content for lab automation. This platform and content pairing help ease the building of development and testing clouds based on OpenStack. Additional content will be provided by a rich partner ecosystem joining Red Hat in the ManageIQ community, including AutoTrader Group, Booz Allen Hamilton, and CiRBA and Chef.
The ManageIQ community is Red Hat’s latest significant contribution to the OpenStack ecosystem, and this community takes the next step in bringing together developers, service providers, system integrators, researchers and users for collaborating and driving innovation in the management of OpenStack and open hybrid clouds. In addition to being the leading corporate contributor of code to the OpenStack Grizzly, Havana and IceHouse releases, Red Hat invests heavily in a number of core technologies that complement the OpenStack ecosystem. Long-standing contributions advance the Open Daylight community for software-defined networking, along with new commitments to the Gluster and Ceph communities for scale-out, open software-defined storage.
As more developers turn to OpenStack to build and integrate their private cloud deployments, lab automation continues to be a critical piece of these solutions. ManageIQ can provide the additional management capabilities developers need, integrating with a number of OpenStack technologies and projects, including Nova, Glance, Ceilometer and Heat, allowing them to extend their OpenStack experience to lab automation for a richer developer experience. By creating the ManageIQ community, Red Hat extends its deep commitment to open source software and aims to advance cloud management by driving open source innovation.
Beyond enabling development and test lab environments, ManageIQ will also provide a rich set of management and operational capabilities for all cloud deployments, from chargeback to tag-based policy and orchestration, to capacity management. As enterprises and service providers build their cloud infrastructure using OpenStack, they will be able to use the open source ManageIQ platform to manage those environments.
Red Hat provides Red Hat CloudForms as a commercial offering based on the ManageIQ technologies for enterprises and service providers who require an enterprise-grade, highly secure and integrated cloud management solution. CloudForms provides heterogeneous support for the management of hybrid clouds built on OpenStack, VMware, KVM, Microsoft and Amazon technologies and includes essential lifecycle management capabilities, certified integration with cloud providers, infrastructure and enterprise systems management solutions, design and implementation services, reference architectures and global 24/7 support. An integral part of Red Hat Cloud Infrastructure, CloudForms enables organizations to rapidly evolve to OpenStack for cloud workloads while also managing traditional workloads across private and hybrid clouds.
Red Hat expects to launch the new ManageIQ open source community in the coming weeks. Interested customers and developers can learn more about joining the community at ManageIQ.org.
Joe Fitzgerald, general manager, cloud management, Red Hat
“While some industry players have focused on building an open source cloud infrastructure with OpenStack and selling expensive, proprietary management software on top of that. We believe the entire cloud should be open with no lock-in, so we are contributing this valuable code base to open up the management stack for the first time.”
Michael Coté, Research Director, Infrastructure Software, 451 Group
“OpenStack has been evolving at breakneck speed and it's clear that proper monitoring and management is needed, from the basics of red/green light monitoring to higher-level orchestration. As the OpenStack infrastructure layers build out, it's encouraging to see people like Red Hat focusing on solving these cloud management problems and open sourcing ManageIQ will help provide an interesting, mature code base to the community, not to mention, the product itself.”
Jason Cantrell, Vice President, Technology, AutoTrader Group
“AutoTrader uses Red Hat CloudForms technology to help consolidate and manage our cloud infrastructure, and we are excited to participate in the ManageIQ community to drive features and requirements that truly benefit the end-user.”
Michael Farber, Executive Vice President, Booz Allen Hamilton
“We believe that a multi-cloud environment should leverage deep integration across domains and processes, and we have developed rich content that leverages the strength of the ManageIQ platform to do just that. By actively participating in the community, we will be focusing on advancing the key integration aspects of the platform.”
Ken Cheney, VP of Business Development, Chef
"Success in today's digitally-driven economy means delighting customers, which is only possible by using web-scale IT to move at extreme speed and scale. Red Hat's ManageIQ Community brings together best-of-breed open source, cloud computing, and IT automation technologies – all core components of web-scale IT – and offers them on a single, open platform. We're excited to join with Red Hat in driving faster, leaner, more agile business and IT strategies through the ManageIQ Community."
Andrew Hillier, Co-Founder and CTO, CiRBA
“CiRBA is looking forward to contributing to the ManageIQ community and enable integration between capacity control analytics and cloud management. The combination will enable intelligent balancing of application demand and capacity supply within and across clouds."

Gartner predicts that the bulk of new IT spending by 2016 will be for cloud platforms and applications and that nearly half of large enterprises will have cloud deployments by the end of 2017. The benefits of the cloud may be clear for applications that can tolerate brief periods of downtime, but for critical applications like SQL Server, Oracle and SAP, companies need a strategy for HA and DR protection. While traditional SAN-based clusters are not possible in these environments, SANless cluste...

The OpenStack cloud operating system includes Trove, a database abstraction layer. Rather than applications connecting directly to a specific type of database, they connect to Trove, which in turn connects to one or more specific databases. One target database is Postgres Plus Cloud Database, which includes its own RESTful API. Trove was originally developed around MySQL, whose interfaces are significantly less complicated than those of the Postgres cloud database. In his session at 16th Cloud...

Enterprises are turning to the hybrid cloud to drive greater scalability and cost-effectiveness. But enterprises should beware as the definition of “policy” varies wildly. In his session at 16th Cloud Expo, Derek Collison, founder and CEO of Apcera, will: Explain what policy is; Show how policy should be arc...

And that’s no mistake, as microservices are really nothing more than a new and improved take on the Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA) best practices we struggled to hammer out over the last decade. Skeptics, however, might say that this change is nothing more than an exercise in buzzword-hopping. SOA is passé, and now that people are ...
