One of the most powerful aspects of the Internet of Things is the process of synthesis it achieves; it provides a mental model for people to associate and relate a number of different technologies under one umbrella concept and trend.
Therefore one early quick win is a simple taxonomy for listing what these different technology camps are, so here is a first draft approach for this that is now included as the guiding framework in our IoT Technology Roadmap:
- Wearable Computing - The smartphone will remain as the central control unit but it will be "Wearables" that generate the feeds of Big Data analysis about our health condition and other real-time bodily information. Radical innovations could include sensing the early signs of a heart attack and automatically broadcasting an alert of your location to emergency 911 services.
- Embedded Web Services - This type of communications will require these devices to be programmed with smart applications, a skill set known as ‘embedded' programming. This is a long established segment of the electronics industry, with the key new requirement being this remote communications, thereby requiring ‘Embedded Web Services' - This concept is succinctly described through this paper.
- IoT Middleware - A key objective of these Web Service transactions will be exchanges between sensors and devices, and some kind of back end enterprise application, creating the need for some form of middleware, such as open source: OpenIoT and commercial: ProSyst.
- InterCloud, IPv6 and Identity Networking - Web services communications between applications will be one benefit of the increasingly mature and widespread adoption of open standards, protocols such as IPv6 for the low level networking, through federated identity and new ‘Future Internet' architectures.
- IoT Security best practices - Corporations and individuals will want information security practices extended to include any and all devices and chips used to store or process data.
- Big Data Cloud Computing - Streams of data from devices will be fed into cloud infrastructure that can support the analytical needs of reporting, analysis, dashboards, extraction, transformation and load (ETL) and predictive analytics.
- An AI of Things - The application of AI (Artificial Intelligence) across this landscape of devices, sensors and central computing resource, to make "smarter supply chains" and other transformational business scenarios.
