6WIND and Cavium Extend Partnership to Deliver Compelling High Performance Solutions for NFV and SDN

Common Software on OCTEON® and Thunder ARMv8 Platforms and LiquidIO®, NITROX® Adaptors for x86 Platform Offload Delivers Required Performance for Next Generation Infrastructure

LAS VEGAS, April 1, 2014 /PRNewswire/ -- Interop -- 6WIND, a high-performance software company, and Cavium, Inc. (NASDAQ: CAVM), a leading provider of semiconductor products that enable intelligent processing for enterprise, data center, wired and wireless networking, today announced an extension of their partnership to deliver joint network functions virtualization (NFV) and software-defined networking (SDN) solutions. This joint solution of 6WINDGate™ packet processing software and Cavium processors will help customers to migrate to next generation NFV and SDN architectures seamlessly. The combination of 6WINDGate software and Cavium processors is a proven solution deployed and currently designed-in by tier-1 OEMs worldwide for high performance applications in wired/wireless infrastructure, enterprises and data centers.

Cavium, Inc. Logo.

6WIND and Cavium's extended partnership includes 6WINDGate support for the Cavium solutions such as LiquidIO and NITROX adaptors as well as OCTEON and Thunder multi-core SoCs to deliver the single high performance data path required to seamlessly and cost effectively transition to virtualized and software-based NFV and SDN architectures.

CAVIUM LiquidIO Intelligent Network Adaptors:
6WIND and Cavium have established a strategic development partnership to leverage 6WINDGate's common data path offload from x86 to LiquidIO using the Intel® DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) API to significantly increase application performance. The same software can be deployed across multiple ISA based host server platforms. LiquidIO adaptors efficiently offload virtual switching and additional functionality such as security and deep packet inspection (DPI) functionality. 6WINDGate will enable smart NIC offloading while sustaining line rate traffic loads.

CAVIUM OCTEON III and Thunder ARMv8 64-bit System on a Chip (SoC) Processors:
6WIND and Cavium will deliver joint technology to power leading edge multicore SoC packet processors by providing 6WINDGate on Cavium SoC platforms to enable complete NFV and SDN solutions. Cavium's optimized multicore processors integrate hardware accelerators for application processing and virtualization functionality, resulting in high throughput line rates for virtualized applications.

CAVIUM NITROX Security Processors:
6WINDGate integrates NITROX security adaptors to be used as a cryptography offload and acceleration option with DPDK (Data Plane Development Kit) software, providing a ready to use fast path IPsec networking stack for x86 servers without the need to modify existing Linux applications.

"We are proud to have worked with Cavium for many years to continue to deliver high performance network applications for leading OEMs worldwide," said Vincent Jardin, CTO for 6WIND. "By enabling Cavium's customers to share their existing data plane infrastructure across multiple platforms with common software we are accelerating the open networking transformation towards NFV and SDN."

"The extended Cavium and 6WIND partnership will enable our joint customers to take further advantage of their Cavium hardware and bring new designs for SDN and NFV to market quickly," said Raghib Hussain, Corporate VP/GM & CTO for Cavium. "Many existing applications utilize Cavium optimized multicore processors. This partnership will expand the market and deployment models for Cavium SoCs across both standalone and offload/acceleration scenarios while delivering high performance and a seamless path to application virtualization."

Performance and Latency Matter with the Transition to NFV and SDN
Organizations are developing the next generation of their application infrastructure toward NFV and SDN by leveraging Linux with standard platform ecosystems. With this evolution, there remain performance challenges to ensure that the new virtualized platforms can obtain the same performance as the previous dedicated, physical platforms.

6WIND and Cavium have extensive experience delivering high performance applications to joint customers. For example with 6WIND's existing PMD supporting Intel® DPDK with Cavium NITROX security processors, customers can obtain 20 Gbps IPsec performance per NITROX III processor, and multiple NITROX III processors can be stacked and leveraged by 6WINDGate's fast path for IPsec.

6WINDGate enables a single software platform across Cavium and x86 technology, allowing customers to achieve the required high performance in physical and virtual environments. This allows customers to share a common software architecture when both architectures include Cavium acceleration engines.

As you move to the cloud, your network should be efficient, secure, and easy to manage. An enterprise adopting a hybrid or public cloud needs systems and tools that provide: Agility: ability to deliver applications and services faster, even in complex hybrid environments Easier manageability: enable reliable connectivity with complete oversight as the data center network evolves Greater efficiency: eliminate wasted effort while reducing errors and optimize asset utilization Security: imple...
High-velocity engineering teams are applying not only continuous delivery processes, but also lessons in experimentation from established leaders like Amazon, Netflix, and Facebook. These companies have made experimentation a foundation for their release processes, allowing them to try out major feature releases and redesigns within smaller groups before making them broadly available. In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Brian Lucas, Senior Staff Engineer at Optimizely, will discuss how by using...
In this strange new world where more and more power is drawn from business technology, companies are effectively straddling two paths on the road to innovation and transformation into digital enterprises. The first path is the heritage trail – with “legacy” technology forming the background. Here, extant technologies are transformed by core IT teams to provide more API-driven approaches. Legacy systems can restrict companies that are transitioning into digital enterprises. To truly become a lead...
The session is centered around the tracing of systems on cloud using technologies like ebpf. The goal is to talk about what this technology is all about and what purpose it serves. In his session at 21st Cloud Expo, Shashank Jain, Development Architect at SAP, will touch upon concepts of observability in the cloud and also some of the challenges we have. Generally most cloud-based monitoring tools capture details at a very granular level. To troubleshoot problems this might not be good enough.
Companies are harnessing data in ways we once associated with science fiction. Analysts have access to a plethora of visualization and reporting tools, but considering the vast amount of data businesses collect and limitations of CPUs, end users are forced to design their structures and systems with limitations. Until now. As the cloud toolkit to analyze data has evolved, GPUs have stepped in to massively parallel SQL, visualization and machine learning.

The next XaaS is CICDaaS. Why? Because CICD saves developers a huge amount of time. CD is an especially great option for projects that require multiple and frequent contributions to be integrated. But… securing CICD best practices is an emerging, essential, yet little understood practice for DevOps teams and their Cloud Service Providers. The only way to get CICD to work in a highly secure environment takes collaboration, patience and persistence. Building CICD in the cloud requires rigorous ar...

DevOps is under attack because developers don’t want to mess with infrastructure. They will happily own their code into production, but want to use platforms instead of raw automation. That’s changing the landscape that we understand as DevOps with both architecture concepts (CloudNative) and process redefinition (SRE). Rob Hirschfeld’s recent work in Kubernetes operations has led to the conclusion that containers and related platforms have changed the way we should be thinking about DevOps and...
