Understanding EtherCloud Storage Management

Coraid's EtherCloud Storage Manager a is a scale-out management platform for software-defined storage

IT professionals spend countless hours working to manage the storage in their care. Businesses completely rely on their IT departments to keep their data, websites, and systems online and functioning properly so they may continue to succeed. Admins must have the ability to quickly respond to changes in the business while staying in budget. As a result, the concept of storage management is constantly changing.

Every IT Admin has a different way of dealing with storage management. While some still work with physical space, many IT teams are looking at virtualization and redundancy in the Cloud. Many find this approach helps to stay agile as their business changes. In this model, enterprise-level storage is kept in "pools" often hosted by vendors who specialize in virtual storage. On the physical storage, the space may be on several different servers, depending on the architecture of the data center.

Additionally, how the space is accessed will vary, depending on the provider. Most commonly, the data and additional space is accessed via a web-based API. Coraid offers a unique storage management solution, EtherCloud Storage Manager, which is a scale-out management product for IT Admins. It utilizes a GUI, a command line interface, and a representational state transfer (REST) API. This system helps IT teams better understand how space is allocated, how to better manage it, and how to adjust, when necessary.

The concept of the "EtherCloud" is a platform for software-defined storage for the business realm with a strong focus on scale-out simplification. It relies on REST APIs in order to connect data-center infrastructure to applications. As a result of advancements like EtherCloud, IT teams are truly embracing the idea of server virtualization. These teams need to not just react quickly when business needs change; they need to be truly dynamic in order to anticipate new business needs. This level of dexterity is simply not achievable using traditional storage management best practices.

Machine learning has taken residence at our cities' cores and now we can finally have "smart cities." Cities are a collection of buildings made to provide the structure and safety necessary for people to function, create and survive. Buildings are a pool of ever-changing performance data from large automated systems such as heating and cooling to the people that live and work within them. Through machine learning, buildings can optimize performance, reduce costs, and improve occupant comfort by sharing information within the building and with outside city infrastructure via real time shared cloud capabilities.
