Infonetics: Enterprise Security Buyers Hoping for ‘Magic Bullet’ Hybrid Security Solutions

Market research firm Infonetics Research released excerpts from its 2013 On-Premise, Hosted, and Hybrid Security Strategies and Vendor Leadership: North American Enterprise Survey, which takes an in-depth look at how businesses plan to protect themselves from electronic threats of all types.

“The clear takeaway from our latest security survey is that businesses are hoping hybrid SaaS (security-as-a-service)/on-premise solutions will be the magic bullet that kills the security efficacy and complexity problem,” reveals Jeff Wilson, principal analyst for security at Infonetics Research. “These companies have made significant investments in security products from a wide range of vendors, and they’re not going to toss them out the window anytime soon. But they want to access the benefits of hosted services and SaaS, too.”

“The best way that vendors can serve customers over the next 3 to 5 years is by delivering true hybrid solutions that seamlessly integrate deployment, policy management, enforcement mechanisms, and reporting across on-premise and hosted solutions,” Wilson advises. “And also by helping customers get more out of their existing solutions.”

  • 67% of enterprises surveyed plan to increase spending on web security, acknowledging that the majority of threats that enter their networks do so through unsafe web browsing
  • Protecting against mobile device threats is rated a very important driver by a vast majority of respondents
  • Enterprises cite “completeness of protection” and “lack of innovation from security vendors” as key barriers to deploying new security solutions
  • 1/3 of survey respondents deploy a hybrid of security products at their sites along with hosted/cloud-based or SaaS solutions
  • Respondents rate Cisco, IBM, McAfee, Microsoft and Symantec as the top vendors in all leadership criteria (technology innovation, security, product roadmap, solution breadth, etc.)

With the introduction of IoT and Smart Living in every aspect of our lives, one question has become relevant: What are the security implications? To answer this, first we have to look and explore the security models of the technologies that IoT is founded upon. In his session at @ThingsExpo, Nevi Kaja, a Research Engineer at Ford Motor Company, discussed some of the security challenges of the IoT infrastructure and related how these aspects impact Smart Living. The material was delivered interactively to engage with the audience.

ShieldX's CEO and Founder, Ratinder Ahuja, believes that traditional security solutions are not designed to be effective in the cloud. The role of Data Loss Prevention must evolve in order to combat the challenges of changing infrastructure associated with modernized cloud environments. Ratinder will call out the notion that security processes and controls must be equally dynamic and able to adapt for the cloud. Utilizing four key factors of automation, enterprises can remediate issues and improve their security posture by maximizing their investments in legacy DLP solutions. The factors include new infrastructures opening up, public cloud, fast services and appliance models to fit in the new world of cloud security.
