Sanctum Networks Breakthrough OpenFlow Data Acceleration Algorithm Delivers Record Line Rates of over 40Gbs

Sanctum Networks Ltd has announced the initial results of a new “Flow” classification Algorithm called Enhanced Recursive Flow Classification or (ERFC). The new algorithm is an enhancement to the existing Recursive Flow Classification (RFC) and has shown exciting results which could have major implications for the Software Defined Networking (SDN) industry.

Sanctum made the announcement while giving the keynote address in the AsiaBSD Conference in Tokyo where it also announced the launch of the first NetBSD Many Core operating system for the Tilera TILE-Gx processor.

Nazneen Shaikh, MD of Sanctum’s R&D Headquarters in India says “the explosive growth in data and network traffic is creating unprecedented demand for more compute power and faster switching of data traffic. At Sanctum Networks, we recognised that this challenge would only be truly addressed with the adaption of powerful, energy efficient algorithms that can harness many cores. RFC or Recursive Flow Classification is one algorithm that is successfully used today by researchers and being contemplated for commercial products ”.

“However, Sanctum is delighted to be able to announce that we have successfully developed a new enhanced version of this algorithm, (ERFC) for OpenFlow switching. Our new algorithm is a software based solution for multi-dimensional packet classification, enabling much higher line rates of 40Gb and beyond to be achieved, with extremely efficient memory usage ”.

“We have tested our new algorithm in a real OpenFlow switching network environment which also included Intel based platforms. Using the Tilera TILE- GX manycore processor and were delighted to see the algorithm performing at 32Mpps on upwards of 10,000 flows, that’s a 2.1x switching capacity to realize fully non-blocking fabric”.

“In particular, our results show that the enhanced multi stage packet classification algorithm can classify multiple fields in excess of one million packets per second and a 50% higher lookup throughput, compared to most other software based OpenFlow switching solutions available today”.

Paul O Callaghan, CEO of parent company, Sanctum Technologies, added “The completion of the new operating system for the Tilera’s TILE-Gx many core processor and in particular, the exciting results seen from our new ERFC Algorithm, represent great progress towards our strategy to develop a truly disruptive Software Defined Networking (SDN) product and I’m delighted to also announce that over coming weeks we will be releasing news of two further algorithms aimed specifically at greatly enhancing the performance of OpenFlow and SDN based Switching. These algorithms and Tilera’s energy efficient multicore architecture, is a truly unique combination. The algorithms have been the result of almost two years hard work by our engineers based in India and I am confident these announcements will undoubtedly differentiate Sanctum Networks product within the rapidly growing SDN and Cloud markets”.

“Open source has always provided a number of benefits, including easing adoption costs, propagating a better understanding of the technology, and allowing for faster evolution and commercialization of products and services based on it,” noted Terry Woloszyn, Founder & CEO, Leeward Security Ltd., in this exclusive Q&A with Cloud Expo Conference Chair Jeremy Geelan. “This is clearly evident with the OpenStack and CloudStack,” Woloszyn continued, “and others that have been quickly commercialized as...
Organizations across the world are increasingly starting to see the benefits of moving more and more services to the cloud. The focus on the cost-saving potential of cloud is rapidly shifting to completely transforming the business with cloud. As organizations are investing enormous sums on technology they are starting to realize that in order to maximize the return on investment and accelerate the business transformation process the first area of focus should be people. By ensuring the organiza...
In his session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Dave Eichorn, Global Data Center Practice Head at Zensar, will share a case study describing how a utility services company handled the migration of its Microsoft platform to the cloud. Challenged with the time-consuming task of opening operations out of temporary offices, this company struggled with the need to simultaneously access data that was accumulated from a vast amount of data-intensive jobs. Zensar migrated the company’s application ...
You're getting pitched every day from your legacy enterprise software and hardware vendors about "cloud." They're doing an amazing job of convincing your CIO and CTO about what cloud is and how you should use it. The reality is they're defending their shrinking market share and keeping you on the legacy treadmill for as long as they can by selling you solutions that aren't "cloud." In her session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Niki Acosta, Cloud Evangelista for Rackspace, will talk thro...
