NTT Communications and its wholly owned U.S. subsidiary, NTT America, the global data and IP service arm of Fortune Global 500 telecom leader Nippon Telegraph & Telephone Corporation (NTT), today announced their participation as Gold Sponsor at the Capacity Latam Conference in Sao Paulo, Brazil. At a time when the telecommunications industry in Latin America is booming and the region is making a concerted effort to lower costs and expand access, NTT Communications is proud to provide insight and leadership on the key issues shaping the broadband and IP transit industry in the area.
The event, currently the largest of its kind for the Latin American wholesale telecommunications sector, is expected to draw more than 180 service providers and carriers from more than 40 countries. Conference sessions are scheduled for March 19-20. This year marks the tenth anniversary of the Capacity Latam 2013.
As part of its involvement this year, NTT Communications also is sponsoring a Technology Workshop on Monday, March 18, focused on Software-Defined Networking (SDN). The day-long workshop is designed specifically for technical specialists and will cover a variety of issues related to SDN, including the effect on networks from a global ISP’s perspective, its network operations centers (NOC), personnel and equipment requirements, and the technical implications on partners and customers.
On Tuesday, March 19, Michael Wheeler, executive vice president of the NTT Communications Global IP Network (GIN) business unit at NTT America, will speak as part of the keynote panel “Adapting for Success in Latin American Wholesale” on the challenges and opportunities global carriers are facing in Latin America. As wholesale business models across the world are evolving, global IP providers are faced with the challenge of moving from traditional revenue streams to new models that consider a more competitive landscape and the adoption of emerging technologies.
“With all of the changes afoot in Latin America and the number of devices and customers connected to IP networks growing exponentially, successful service providers in this region will have an established infrastructure of high bandwidth, next-generation equipment and industry expertise to meet the ever evolving, growing demand,” said Mr. Wheeler. “Improving Internet services and bandwidth capacity is not about one country or one city in particular — it’s about the entire region. For this reason, from operations and sales perspectives, it’s very important to have direct connections to the area,” Mr. Wheeler added.
Mr. Wheeler’s comments refer to NTT Communications’ recent infrastructure investments in the region. In late 2011 the company rolled out a Point-of-Presence (PoP) in Sao Paulo. Since then, NTT Communications has worked with Internet service providers, multinational enterprises and Internet-based businesses to connect them to international markets through its Tier-1 Global IP Network. As Brazil prepares for the 2014 FIFA World Cup and 2016 Summer Olympic Games, international carriers are crucial in helping to meet the Internet data needs. These events will generate large volumes of video content originated in Brazil and streamed out globally.
These efforts, dovetailed with new initiatives to build a major continent-wide fiber-optic ring, as well as plans to establish submarine cable links with the U.S., Europe and Africa, could help to reduce the region’s existing reliance on North America. Down the road, statistics from research firms such as Yankee Group indicate that telecom development in Latin American nations such as Colombia, Chile and Argentina could outstrip industry-related growth in Brazil. Regulatory realities could play a factor, too, as Colombia and Chile have some of the most open legal environments on the continent.
In the meantime, Wheeler states that NTT Communications will continue to evaluate possible expansions in Latin America over the next few years, investing in infrastructure and sponsoring more conferences such as Capacity Latam 2013.

Cloud enables SMBs to access new, scalable resources – previously only available to enterprises – in flexible and cost-effective ways. McKinsey’s SMB Cloud Report projects the public cloud market to reach $40-$50 billion by 2015, with SMBs comprising 65% of public cloud spending in 2015. But selling cloud to SMBs raises the questions of who, what and how.

The age of data center automation is upon us. Whether it's cloud or SDN or devops in general, automation as a means to achieve efficiency and, one hopes, free up resources that can be then redirected to focus on innovation.
