Um diese Vision umzusetzen, legt Tekelec seinen Fahrplan für ThinkingNetworks™ vor – hoch entwickelte und softwarebestimmte Netzwerke, die sich selbst organisieren und optimieren und selbst ihre Reaktionen auf unbekannte und unvorhersehbare Ereignisse bestimmen, ganz ähnlich wie es das menschliche Gehirn tut.
Die Grundlage von ThinkingNetworks ist eine intelligente, virtualisierte Kontrollschicht, über die Betreiber elastische Netzwerkstreams für Over-the-Top- (OTT-), Cloud-, Machine-to-Machine- (M2M) und Best-Effort-Services schaffen können.

Aus diesen Gründen werden sich die Serviceproviders in vier sich überschneidenden Phasen zu ThinkingNetworks hinbewegen:
Phase 1: das New Diameter Network (NDN). Aufbau eines hoch skalierbaren NDN, das auf dem Diameter Protokoll basierende Kommunikation zwischen Gateways, Richtlinienservern, Gebührensystemen, Datenbanken mit Abonnentenprofilen sowie Funktionen für Mobilität und Session-Management organisiert.
Innerhalb dieses NDN nimmt die Anatomie von ThinkingNetworks durch drei Dinge Gestalt an:
- Den Richtlinienserver (PCRF), das „Gehirn“ des Netzwerks, das die Logik und die Regeln für neue Geschäftsmodelle und Einnahmequellen bietet, auf der Grundlage der Echtzeitwahrnehmung von Netzwerk, Abonnenten, Gerät und Anwendung;
- Den Diameter Signaling Router (DSR), das „zentrale Nervensystem“, das ständig Signalisierungsnachrichten zwischen Richtlinienservern, Gebührensystemen, Datenbanken mit Abonnentenprofilen und Gateways routet, um Services zu monetarisieren; und
- Das Subscriber Profile Repository (SPR), das „Gedächtnis“, das Daten zu Profil, Zustand, Verhalten und Nutzung speichert, um Services personalisieren zu können.
Phase 2: Cloud XG™. Das NDN wird auf einer vollständig virtualisierten Cloud-Computing-Plattform realisiert. Diese Phase stellt eine grundlegende Veränderung bei der Art dar, wie Betreiber Netzwerkskalierbarkeit und Flexibilität hinsichtlich Sessions, Transaktionen und Datendurchlauf verbessern. In CloudXG:
- Die Cloud-Plattform bietet einen gemeinsamen Virtualisierungs-Hypervisor für die NDN-Komponenten;
- Der Cloud Virtualizer verwendet Virtualisierungstechnologien, um dem verfügbaren Hardware-Pool dynamisch Ressourcen hinzufügen/daraus entfernen zu können;
- Der Cloud Orchestrator bietet dynamische Zuweisung der benötigten NDN-Rechenressourcen und weist den Cloud Virtualizer und den Cloud Flow Manager an, weitere Diameter-Ressourcen zu instantiieren; und
- Der Cloud Flow Manager verwendet Software-Defined-Network-Technologien (SDN) wie OpenFlow, um Datenströme, die in die Cloud fließen oder aus dieser kommen, dynamisch zu manipulieren.
Die in der CloudXG-Phase gebotenen Informationen, Kapazitäten und Steuerung erlauben es den Betreibern, ihre Geschäftsmodelle über Zugangsservices hinaus zu erweitern.
Phase 3: MobileSocial™. Mobile Betreiber können Netzwerk- und Abonnenteninformationen ausnutzen, um Opt-in-Angebote, mobile Werbung und andere wertvolle personalisierte Angebote für Anbieter von Over-the-Top-Anwendungen und Programminhalten anzubieten. Dies bereitet für sie den Weg, um zu Providern des digitalen Lifestyle zu werden. Wichtige Elemente sind:
- Das MobileSocial Repository (MSR), eine Datenbank mit hohem Datendurchlauf auf Grundlage der neuesten Fortschritte in der Big-Data-Technologie, sowie fortschrittliche Analytik zur Bestimmung von Verhalten, Standards, Präferenzen und sozialen Verbindungen von Abonnenten.
- Die OTT Application Management Function, die die Verbindung mit dem MSR herstellt, sodass betreibergesteuerte oder externe Services Abonnenteninformationen sicher über standardmäßige offene Anwendungsschnittstellen erhalten können.
- Das Mobile Policy Gateway (MPG), das Richtlinien direkt auf die Geräte ausweitet, sodass Betreiber die Auswahl des Mobilfunk- und WLAN-Netzwerks auf der Grundlage von Abonnentenstufe, Gerätetyp, Anwendungsnutzung oder Netzwerkbedingungen managen können. Es bietet auch personalisierte Anwendungs-Steuermöglichkeiten für ein besseres Kundenerlebnis.
- Die Traffic-Detection-Funktion kennzeichnet Medienströme für ausgewählte, qualitativ hochwertige Services auf viel detailliertere Art, als dies bei den heutigen Funktionen für Deep Packet Inspection (DPI) und Videooptimierung möglich ist. Dadurch ist hervorragende Personalisierung anwendungsbasierter Dienste möglich.
Phase 4: ThinkingNetworks. Diese Netzwerkentwicklung gipfelt in der Endphase von Netzwerkintelligenz und -elastizität, optimiert für Dienste und Angebote des digitalen Lifestyles. Betreiber können Netzwerke einstellen und optimieren nach Zeit, Ereignissen und Inhalten, die aus einer Vielzahl von Quellen hinzugefügt werden. Zu den entscheidenden Elementen gehören:
- Der Network Event Listener, der „zuhört“ und Netzwerkereignisse an den richtliniengesteuerten SDN-Controller meldet. Zu den Ereignissen können RAN-Staus, Verschlechterung der Einrichtezeit von Datensessions, exzessiver Aufruf von Richtlinien, Diameter-Signalisierungsverkehr-Überlast sowie Anforderungen für den speziellen Umgang mit hochwertigen Datensessions gehören.
- Der richtliniengesteuerte SDN-Controller erhält Berichte oder Impulse vom Network Event Listener. Er bewertet die Situation und trifft in Verbindung mit Informationen aus dem MSR Entscheidungen mit einer anspruchsvollen, regelbasierten Richtlinienprozessor. Er definiert eine neue Qualität von Serviceregeln auf der Grundlage von IP-Flow-Bedingungen und kann außerdem mithilfe von OpenFlow und anderen Standards hochwertige IP-Flows im Zusammenhang mit relevanten Abonnentensessions selektiv managen.
