Juniper Networks Accelerates Four-Step Roadmap to Software-Defined Networks With New Software and Services

Service Providers Can Virtualize Mobile Networks to Achieve Faster Services Provisioning and On-Demand Capacity Management From a Common Platform

SUNNYVALE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 02/21/13 -- Juniper Networks (NYSE: JNPR), the industry leader in network innovation, today unveiled new software and services enabling mobile service providers to realize immediate benefits while laying the foundation to build software-defined networks (SDN). By deploying Juniper Networks' new services provisioning application, mobile infrastructure application and virtualized services engine, customers can achieve elastic capacity, increased service velocity, while lowering overall operating expenses (OPEX). Based on use cases and data from ACG Research, customers may realize up to 65 percent reduction in OPEX and up to 54 percent reduction in total cost of ownership.

The software and services announced today come on the heels of Juniper's introduction of the most comprehensive SDN vision in the industry and follows Juniper's roadmap to transition enterprises and service providers from traditional network infrastructures to SDNs. Specifically, with today's announcement, customers can address two of the four steps to SDN:

  • Step 1: Centralize network management, analytics and configuration functionality to provide a single master that configures all networking devices:

Announced today, Juniper Networks® Junos® Space Services Activation Director application enables service providers to provision thousands of seamless services, including multiprotocol label switching (MPLS) and Carrier Ethernet for mobile backhaul. Service Activation Direction lowers OPEX cost through simplified deployment and management, and greater business insight gained from service provider networks. The Services Activation Director, along with other Junos Space applications, is scheduled to be available for purchase in the first half of 2013, which allows the software to transfer to any network element with which it operates.

  • Step 2: Extract networking and security services from the underlying hardware by creating service virtual machines (VMs):

Also announced today, Juniper Networks Mobile Control Gateway (virtual MCG) is now running as a virtualized function on the JunosV App Engine, providing signaling and control (SGSN/MME) functions to LTE, 3G and 2G radio access networks. As a virtualized network function, mobile operators can rapidly scale up and down capacity to meet variable demand requirements. Comparing a standalone physical appliances approach to a virtualized approach, mobile operators have the ability to accelerate deployment time by as much as 46 percent and reduce deployment cost by as much as 61 percent, according to ACG Research. Part of Juniper Networks Mobile Packet Core solution, the virtual MCG is co-developed with Hitachi, the first third-party to virtualize a network service on the JunosV App Engine.

Now shipping, Juniper Networks JunosV App Engine centralizes the development, provisioning and management of both Juniper Networks and third-party applications on a common platform. This platform also enables customers to grow the compute, memory and processing resource needed for cloud-based applications and services attached specifically to the MX Series 3D Universal Edge Router.

Analyst Quote:
"With mobile traffic growth exploding, operators need a virtualized Mobile Packet Core for scaling capacity up and down to both increase service velocity and control costs. Our research has validated that Juniper's virtual Mobile Control Gateway has a 54 percent lower total cost of ownership over five years and the time to deploy the initial implementation is 46 percent faster than a standalone appliance-based solution. In addition, the virtual MCG provides incremental capacity additions in 87 percent less time, enabling operators to address the volatility of mobile control plane traffic driven by smartphones and smartphones apps."
- Dr. Ray Mota, managing partner, ACG Research

Partner Quote:
"Through our strong technology partnership, Hitachi's goal was to create a solution that would elastically scale from small to very large. Juniper's JunosV App Engine allows Hitachi to quickly innovate and deliver market-leading MME/SGSN Gateway services faster and more cost efficiently for our customers. For mobile service providers, it means lower capital and operating expenses coupled with a superior user experience and assurance that communications functions operate reliably."
- Kiichiro Taima, CEO and president of Hitachi Communication Technologies America

Juniper Networks Quote:
"Mobile networks are perfectly suited to benefit from Juniper Network's SDN approach. Exponential mobile data usage coupled with an increasingly wide array of multi-media smartphones and tablets put enormous demands on high-performance networking. Juniper Networks, a recognized leader in carrier-grade IP network equipment, is leading the industry by delivering the next generation of SDN software services."
- Bob Muglia, executive vice president, Software Solutions Division, Juniper Networks

Cloud Expo Breaking News
After a couple of false starts, cloud-based desktop solutions are picking up steam, driven by trends such as BYOD and pervasive high-speed connectivity. In his session at 15th Cloud Expo, Seth Bostock, CEO of IndependenceIT, cuts through the hype and the acronyms, and discusses the emergence of full-featured cloud workspaces that do for the desktop what cloud infrastructure did for the server. He’ll discuss VDI vs DaaS, implementation strategies and evaluation criteria.
Cloud computing started a technology revolution; now DevOps is driving that revolution forward. By enabling new approaches to service delivery, cloud and DevOps together are delivering even greater speed, agility, and efficiency. No wonder leading innovators are adopting DevOps and cloud together! In his session at DevOps Summit, Andi Mann, Vice President of Strategic Solutions at CA Technologies, will explore the synergies in these two approaches, with practical tips, techniques, research data, war stories, case studies, and recommendations.
Cloud Computing is evolving into a Big Three of Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud, and Microsoft Azure. Cloud 360: Multi-Cloud Bootcamp, being held Nov 4–5, 2014, in conjunction with 15th Cloud Expo in Santa Clara, CA, delivers a real-world demonstration of how to deploy and configure a scalable and available web application on all three platforms. The Cloud 360 Bootcamp, led by Janakiram MSV, an analyst with Gigaom Research, is the first bootcamp that introduces the core concepts of Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) based on the workings of the Big Three platforms – Amazon EC2, Google Compute Engine, and Azure VMs. Bootcamp attendees will get to see the big picture and also receive the knowledge needed to make the best cloud decisions for their business applications and entire enterprise IT organization.
Scott Jenson leads a project called The Physical Web within the Chrome team at Google. Project members are working to take the scalability and openness of the web and use it to talk to the exponentially exploding range of smart devices. Nearly every company today working on the IoT comes up with the same basic solution: use my server and you'll be fine. But if we really believe there will be trillions of these devices, that just can't scale. We need a system that is open a scalable and by using the URL as a basic building block, we open this up and get the same resilience that the web enjoys.
The Internet of Things is a natural complement to the cloud and related technologies such as Big Data, analytics, and mobility. In his session at Internet of @ThingsExpo, Joe Weinman will lay out four generic strategies – digital disciplines – to exploit emerging digital technologies for strategic advantage. Joe Weinman has held executive leadership positions at Bell Labs, AT&T, Hewlett-Packard, and Telx, in areas such as corporate strategy, business development, product management, operations, and R&D.

There are 182 billion emails sent every day, generating a lot of data about how recipients and ISPs respond. Many marketers take a more-is-better approach to stats, preferring to have the ability to slice and dice their email lists based numerous arbitrary stats. However, fundamentally what really matters is whether or not sending an email to a particular recipient will generate value. Data Scientists can design high-level insights such as engagement prediction models and content clusters that allow marketers to cut through the noise and design their campaigns around strong, predictive signals, rather than arbitrary statistics. SendGrid sends up to half a billion emails a day for customers such as Pinterest and GitHub. All this email adds up to more text than produced in the entire twitterverse. We track events like clicks, opens and deliveries to help improve deliverability for our customers – adding up to over 50 billion useful events every month. While SendGrid data covers only abo...
