Tellabs will demonstrate mobile backhaul with small cell, SON and SDN capabilities at Mobile World Congress 2013

Speed small cell deployment with automated installation and easy-to-use iPad application

NAPERVILLE, Ill., Feb. 13, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- Tellabs is extending its mobile backhaul solution with new small cell aggregation and self-optimizing network (SON) tools. The company is enhancing its optical and Ethernet capabilities to help customers succeed with the migration to LTE networks.

Tellabs will demonstrate new SDN (software-defined networking) and SON capabilities for mobile backhaul at Mobile World Congress 2013. Tellabs' exhibit will be in Hall 6, Stand 6E10 at the Fira Gran Via in Barcelona, February 25-28.

Demonstration: SON automates network operations

Tellabs will demonstrate how smart tools make a big difference in small cell and macro cell deployments. SON automates routine tasks so operators can focus on the user experience and service differentiation to ensure optimized operating expenses.

"As mobile operators roll out public access small cells, they will also need new generations of small cell optimized cell-site switches and routers," said Patrick Donegan, Senior Analyst, Heavy Reading. "Leading backhaul solution vendors are evolving their portfolios to deliver these products with markedly reduced footprint, environmental hardening for outdoor deployment, as well as a rich feature set including security, synchronization and demarcation."

Tellabs' small cell solution, including the Tellabs® 8602 Smart Router, enables an easy and cost-efficient way to deal with the capacity increases operators face today. The new small cell aggregator is equipped with SON capabilities to speed deployment. With SON deployment tools in a mobile backhaul network, technicians can easily and quickly plug in a small cell or macrocell backhaul device, which gets automatic device configurations and service connectivity from the Tellabs® 8000 Intelligent Network Manager (INM). After successful automated testing, the technician can use an iPad to sign off the deployment on site.

Demonstration: SDN encourages innovation across the network

Using SDN, mobile operators will be able to differentiate their services and speed new service introduction. Operators can innovate by writing and customizing service-level applications for the network to ensure fast time to market.

For example, Tellabs will showcase its new SDN Congestion Control Application (CCA) prototype, developed on top of the Tellabs 8000 INM. In case of increased utilization in the aggregation network, CCA prevents the congestion problem by redirecting the traffic based on end-to-end network view. The SDN controller functionality in the Tellabs 8000 INM, based on OpenFlow 1.3, steers traffic in the access network built with Tellabs® 8609 Smart Routers.

With SDN, mobile operators gain flexible opportunities to create new solutions across the data and optical layers, both managed by the Tellabs 8000 INM. Tellabs is planning SDN proof of concept testing with customers on the Tellabs® 7100 optical transport system (OTS), Tellabs® 8600 Smart Routers and Tellabs 8000 INM during the first half of 2013.

Tellabs will highlight mobile backhaul networks based on packet optical platforms, including the Tellabs 7100 OTS and Tellabs® 7300 Ethernet switches.

To provide mobile backhaul for small cells and macro cells in metro areas, Tellabs will show the Tellabs® 1150 multiservice access platform. For mobile and WiFi traffic in buildings and on campuses, Tellabs Optical LAN Solution addresses backhaul needs.

The company will show Tellabs® Insight AnalyticsSM Services solution, which enables mobile operators to find the root causes of problems in a couple of clicks, improve network planning and improve the user experience by correlating it with network performance.
