Four Ways to Manage Your Internal Cloud Efficiently

Start with your current quality of service and cost metrics

IT departments today are in a new position. No longer simply providers of technology to an organization, they’ve become true service providers. Today, the IT department or data center leverages advances in infrastructure and virtualization technology to change the way we do business for the better.

Yet, transitioning into a service provider who offers internal cloud solutions can be a challenge. Here are some principles for efficient internal cloud service management you need to follow:

  1. Start with your current quality of service and cost metrics. You need to understand where you stand. Do some benchmarking, and identify where you’re using your resources. Compare your output with third party cloud vendors and you’ll see opportunities for improvement.
  2. Organize your internal cloud services. You need to be able to define what internal cloud services you offer to your organization. This should include service level agreements, just like those business units would receive from third party providers. It should also include costs. Actively identify which applications can be moved to the internal cloud, and what it would take.
  3. Standardize a self-service IT model. Once you’ve organized your internal cloud offerings, you should be able to automate provisioning and fulfillment. A business unit can request a service, and you can use your internal cloud tools to provide that service, measure SLAs, and enforce delivery of those services.
  4. Move to billing based on consumption. This is an essential step for internal clouds, but it’s one that many organizations are reluctant to take. The fact of the matter is that billing out to other departments helps to make your internal cloud defensible. Even if your organization won’t support a full chargeback process, you can offer a showback whereby you provide a summary of the value of services that IT provides to business units via their cloud solutions.

Internal cloud solutions benefit organizations in a number of ways. They offer internal solutions for some applications that would otherwise be sent to third parties, and they offer business units the ability to decide whether they prefer to use an internal or external resource for many of their applications.

The new open source cloud orchestration platform called OpenStack is the promise of flexible network virtualization, and network overlays are looking closer than ever. The vision of this platform is to enable the on-demand creation of many distinct networks on top of one underlying physical infrastructure in the cloud environment. The platform will support automated provisioning and management of large groups of virtual machines or compute resources, including extensive monitoring in the cloud.
In his session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Dave Eichorn, Global Data Center Practice Head at Zensar, will share a case study describing how a utility services company handled the migration of its Microsoft platform to the cloud. Challenged with the time-consuming task of opening operations out of temporary offices, this company struggled with the need to simultaneously access data that was accumulated from a vast amount of data-intensive jobs. Zensar migrated the company’s application ...

You're getting pitched every day from your legacy enterprise software and hardware vendors about "cloud." They're doing an amazing job of convincing your CIO and CTO about what cloud is and how you should use it. The reality is they're defending their shrinking market share and keeping you on the legacy treadmill for as long as they can by selling you solutions that aren't "cloud." In her session at the 12th International Cloud Expo, Niki Acosta, Cloud Evangelista for Rackspace, will talk thro...
The rise of cloud computing has exposed hard drive-based storage as the new data center bottleneck. Combating this, data center managers have deployed SSDs to gain the performance needed to provide real-time access to data. However, due to budget constraints, many have turned to consumer-grade SSDs without understanding that they wear out quickly when processing enterprise workloads. In this session, Esther Spanjer will discuss recent endurance advancements in SSD technology that enable usage of...
