Businesses to Take Advantage of Big Data Analytics With Enterprise-Ready Apache Hadoop Solutions From NetApp and Hortonworks

Customers Also Gain Additional Choice and Flexibility in Architecting Their Big Data Analytics Strategy With New NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop Rack

SAN JOSE, CA -- (Marketwire) -- 06/13/12 -- Hadoop Summit 2012 - Today, customers gained two new choices to deploy enterprise-ready Apache Hadoop solutions and solve their big data analytics requirements.

First, NetApp (NASDAQ: NTAP) and Hortonworks entered a strategic partnership to develop and pretest joint Apache Hadoop solutions using Hortonworks Data Platform. These solutions will help customers simplify access to their data and gain deeper business insight to make the right decisions faster.

Second, NetApp unveiled the NetApp® Open Solution for Hadoop Rack, which combines network, compute, and storage resources for customers who need a ready-to-deploy enterprise Hadoop solution. The new solution bolsters NetApp's existing Hadoop portfolio and gives customers greater choice and flexibility to deploy Hadoop in their enterprise.

Separately, NetApp today introduced enhanced data protection and simplified management capabilities to help customers accelerate their big data innovation on the NetApp E-Series platform. Read the separate press release to learn how organizations can convert big data into a business driver with solutions from NetApp.

NetApp and Hortonworks Contribute to Open Apache Hadoop
Extracting business value from data requires the right analytics tools, servers, and storage to ingest and analyze the data. Increasingly, companies are turning to Apache Hadoop to store and analyze raw, complex data and turn it into valuable business insights. NetApp and Hortonworks will provide solutions built using Hortonworks Data Platform that offer customers breakthroughs in stability, management, and efficiency to enhance their enterprise Hadoop deployments and deliver the following business benefits:

  • Manage larger and more complex data with lower operating expenses and storage costs for a lower total cost of ownership
  • Accelerate business processes and improve decision-making capabilities by extracting value from big data faster and more easily
  • Increase business productivity with less downtime, higher data reliability, and faster time to recovery

The two companies' development work will be contributed back to the Apache Hadoop community with the aim of driving greater Hadoop adoption in the enterprise and providing improved capabilities such as cluster performance and storage utilization, service-level agreement attainment, and data availability.

"Our expertise in Hadoop, combined with NetApp's experience in data and storage management, will give customers the best solution to drive storage and operational efficiency," said Mitch Ferguson, vice president of business development, Hortonworks. "An important aspect of our joint development work will be to donate back to the community. The solutions we build will extend a flexible and open big data analytics framework."

Deploy Apache Hadoop Right Away with NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop Rack
The new NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop Rack enables businesses to move Apache Hadoop deployments out of the lab and into enterprise production right away by combining networking, compute, and storage resources in one integrated solution. Customers receive best-of-breed components from NetApp and other leading vendors to deploy Hadoop more easily, faster, and more reliably, all at a lower cost than do-it-yourself Hadoop deployments using commodity storage. The NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop Rack delivers the following benefits to customers:

  • Customers are not locked in to a specific analytics tool to use in processing big data and working with Hadoop
  • Customers can choose from a number of leading-edge Hadoop and other big data analytical tools for flexibility in architecting their big data analytics strategy
  • Enterprise support is included and NetApp Professional Services can accelerate deployment and provide Hadoop expertise

The NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop Rack bolsters NetApp's portfolio of big data solutions on its E-Series platform. NetApp big data solutions are built on NetApp E-Series and Data ONTAP® platforms to efficiently process, analyze, manage, and access data at scale to meet customers' analytics, bandwidth, and content needs across a diverse number of industries, including oil and gas, financial services, media and entertainment, high-performance computing, and public sector. Customers can spark innovation, make better decisions, and drive successful business outcomes at the speed of today's business with NetApp big data solutions.

"Our strategic relationship with Hortonworks and our new NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop Rack align with our strategy to partner with best-of-breed companies to deliver integrated solutions that give our customers greater flexibility and interoperability," said Rich Clifton, senior vice president, Solutions and Integrations Group, NetApp. "While other storage vendors use proprietary solutions that limit the use and interoperability of their big data or Hadoop solutions, we intend to give customers choices, whether they're looking to work with the analytical tools they already have, deploy an entirely new Hadoop solution, or just experiment with Hadoop."

Pricing and Availability
NetApp and Hortonworks joint solutions will be available later this year from NetApp sales and channel partners. The NetApp Open Solution for Hadoop Rack is available today from NetApp sales and channel partners. Pricing is available from NetApp direct sales and channel partners.

You know you need the cloud, but you're hesitant to simply dump everything at Amazon since you know that not all workloads are suitable for cloud. You know that you want the kind of ease of use and scalability that you get with public cloud, but your applications are architected in a way that makes the public cloud a non-starter. You're looking at private cloud solutions based on hyperconverged infrastructure, but you're concerned with the limits inherent in those technologies. What do you do?
Recently, WebRTC has a lot of eyes from market. The use cases of WebRTC are expanding - video chat, online education, online health care etc. Not only for human-to-human communication, but also IoT use cases such as machine to human use cases can be seen recently. One of the typical use-case is remote camera monitoring. With WebRTC, people can have interoperability and flexibility for deploying monitoring service. However, the benefit of WebRTC for IoT is not only its convenience and interopera...
